An ad-supported local info site called Outside.in has been launched today by John Geraci and Steven Berlin Johnson, who've been part of other Web startups like Feed Magazine, Plastic.com, Pheeder.com and Neighbornode.net. Johnson was the co-creator of Feed Magazine.
Outside.in will grab feeds from a number of local blogs that will cover 63 cities and 3,217 neighborhoods, and will cover things from business, local activities and news, while connecting them with the ZIP codes their stories talk about.
At the outset the site will use for the most part local blogs, but is also asking users to submit links to other newspaper stories that may cover their
neighborhoods.
In the beginning the company is using Google Adsense as their key monetizer, but will be starting to look for local, targeted advertisers soon.
"For the local advertisers who just want to be targeting the people who are in their immediate community, we also are completely optimized for that. We might do a little test run in Brooklyn and hire someone to sell Brooklyn and see what the model looks like, but we haven't gotten that far," Johnson said.He added that the service will work and be organized around ZIP codes. In light of that, they will also let national advertisers - reaching out to certain demographic ZIP codes - market within the system as well.
