TV Guide is looking to be the choice of Web users who try to find the online TV shows they're looking for. They are set to launch a beta version in April of 2007 of a video search tool that will help searches find the clips or episodes they're looking for on the Web. A full launch of the service is scheduled for September.
The one caveat of the service is that it's not going to be for the purpose of finding the endless amount of user-generated videos or clips, but rather it will be connected to about 60 major media Web sites and video portals for the purpose of finding original programming from traditional media companies.
While TV Guide is pretty late to the video search space, their strong brand
actually could put them in the lead very quickly in the professional video content search arena.
Technology analyst Rob Enderle said concerning TV Guide that "Today, TV Guide can be better. But fast-forward two years from now, and you wonder if TV Guide has the resources to compete with Google long term."
The thing I think about this immediately is it's possible that this could be a fragmented market almost right away. By that I mean that younger users may possibly stick with Google as their video search engine of choice, or other entrants in the field like Blinkx or AOL's search tool that uses technology from Truveo Inc.
On the other hand TV Guide has such a strong brand that older users may gravitate toward them immediately. With the company deciding to target major media content, they also can start within that space and master it before thay may decide to tackle a wider search circle.
It seems to me that upfront TV Guide will take the lead in video search, as far as it relates to professionally made content. It depends on their performance if that will last over the long-term.
I'm not sure if simply having more money on Google's part will decide who wins this battler over the years. I think video search needs more than that to be the leading contender.
They company says they will use an ad model to monetize the service.

Yeh we've been talking about this over at Highbrid Nation. Honestly I'm not sure TV Guide can make a dent in the market. They do have a powerful brand though.
