Skype has quietly been working with a new "community-generated guide" where Skype users can help people get information about various businesses all around the world. They'll be able to offer their input on which companies to use, rate and review them. The project is currently in beta with about 4,500 business listings from 124 countries already on the site, according to Clickz.
The company said that there figure they will have over 1 million listings by the end of this year.
In a statement Skype said that "Currently in its beta test phase, Skype Prime is reliant on how people and small businesses sell and share their expertise and knowledge on Skype. User feedback has always been a fundamental part of how Skype has evolved as a product and equally, a part of its popularity.
Giving millions of people and small businesses the opportunity to charge for their expertise, Skype Prime is a new direction for the company."
At this time the new service is ad-free, but Jennifer Caukin, Skype North America's director of communication, said that the company is aware of the revenue opportunities that the exist with such a highly visited site. When the site increases even more in visitors, at that time she added that the company will look at non-intrusive ways to monetize the new site.
