Portals are Still Growing Ad Revenue, What's Going On? - Part 3

Another Reason Why Portals Will be Attractive for Some Time

How can we think of portals in a way that is easy to understand why they will always at least attract a certain amount of people? Think of it in a way of a place one might hang out when your single but nothing looking for someone to have a permanent relationship with.

You go there, find interesting people to talk to and meet, but you have no other interest that being general with them. The thought of something specific isn't on your mind. You want to hang out, have fun and go back to your life uninterrupted.

Portals are like that. They are very general and cover topics in a cursory way. They're not deep and wide but shallow and touch on a little bit of everything.

It's like being single, it's fun hanging out with other single people that aren't looking for anything else, but when you come up with the desire for something more specific and deeper, the single scene no longer looks as attractive as it used to do.

Yahoo%20Portal.jpgAgain, portals are the same way. Once you get used to what the portal has to offer, it's not too long before you want something much more specific and suited to your specific interests. That's where the various niche sites are created to fill those types of specific desires, wants and needs.

Like we talked about last post, that's why there will always be a wave of general people looking at portals. It's a place to hook-up in a general way with online content. Once you get a taste for that, the time will always come when you want something deeper.

But there is always a new group of people coming online or growing up age-wise, that will start off looking at portals. That's why they will always have some traffic going to them. Like TV, even though media has long been fragmented, there are still times you go back to watch a specific show you like.

Portals are like that from the opposite way of looking at it. They are places people occasionally check back with to see if they just might happen to hit something of interest that day, or if you don't want something deep, but something light to read quickly. Portals fulfill that desire.

Having said that, the time is coming when portals will reach as high as they ever will, and they'll start to consistently fall in visitation and time spent on them. That time is still a ways away though, and for a season it will look like they're the new mass media. That won't be the case. When that time comes, it'll probably be the height of their growth and power, and from there they'll gradually, consistently lose their luster and strength for a long period of time.

According to a report by eMarketer, the idea that the portal is dead is premature, at the least. Their report shows that for the big four - Yahoo! (YHOO), AOL (TWX), MSN (MSFT) and Google (GOOG), they accounted for 57.4... [Read More]
