Kim Williams, an NFL executive threw out the idea at a panel discussion at the American Association of Advertising Agencies' media conference concerning the idea that the NFL is looking at ways to provide fans ways to create mashups with NFL game footage, music and voiceovers and their own homemade content.
Once the videos were created, the league is thinking of then allowing people to upload and post them on NFL.com, according to Williams.
She did say that at this time it is only in the talking stage at the league offices, and nothing is for sure. She added that it would be "fun for us to do," when talking
about it being like an "America Funniest Home Videos" type of clips.
This would make sense for the NFL to do, as no matter how many cease-and-desist letters they send, the clips will continue to be uploaded to video-sharing sites. Why not provide the material and space for them to be showcased on their Web site? There's no doubt that it would be a hit.
You can picture little Johnny throwing a pass and his favorite NFL receiver than being shown catching it. The creativity and engagement would be huge. This seems like a no-brainer to me.
Williams said that the challenges are finding a balance between copyright protection, marketing and then monetizing the effort. I don't think any of that will be a problem. That's something that the NFL is good at.
