TiVo (TIVO) and Amazon.com (AMZN) announced that the beta stage of their new partnership is over and Amazon.com's Unbox download service is now live. The service had been in beta since last month when the companies announced their deal.
Subscribers of TiVo can now directly access the Amazon.com Unbox TV and movie download service via their digital video recorders.
Those who have TiVo's Series2 or Series3 broadband-ready boxes are able to participate. It's not available to those using DirecTV (DTV) TiVo, Series1 users or those who use a telephone line to access the service, according to the site.
If you want to use the service, all you've got to do is log on to the Unbox-TiVo Web site from your computer and sync the Amazon and TiVo accounts together. From there you simply download and watch what you want on your television.
The majority of TV downloads will cost $1.99, and between $9.99 and $14.99 for movie downloads. One thing different that Unbox offers from Apple (AAPL) iTunes is that you can rent movies also, starting from $1.99.
Amazon also said in the announcement that they will also be offering movies from Sony (SNE) and MGM Studios as well now, adding to their existing agreements with Fox Entertainment (NWS-A), CBS (CBS-A), Showtime, Warner Bros. (TWX) and Paramount (VIA-B).
I don't know if it will matter much or not, but I'm sure the two companies aren't bothered too much by Apples' recent announcement that the Apple TV hardware project has been delayed longer than expected, probably for several more weeks.
