With Fashion Week in New York about to begin, iVillage, an NBC Universal (GE) property, has decided to put on a fashion show in the virtual world 'Second Life.' The show will be put offered Monday.
Looking to find Web users who will spread the message, they are trying to tap into Web users familiar with interacting with the site.
"If we can get this group of women--who are chatty, who look to one another, who frequently are bloggers themselves--that's a great way to market ourselves in a new form of media," said iVillage Chief Marketing Officer Linda Boff.
Included in the show itself will be virtual clothing and accessories that are designed by make-believe Second Life companies. Those that attend the event will be able to visit the designers' virtual stores via teleporting to the locations in the virtual world. There they will be able to dress their avatars with the items that had been featured in the show.
One thing about this that show that there is a way to go with virtual worlds is that there is a limitation on the number of avatars able to visit the show, which stands at only 400 based upon the technical limitations involved. As a result iVillage is also looking at other places on the Web to stream the event.
For this to have a chance to work for them, they do need to have some good gabbers with the limited numbers that can see the show. Who knows though, maybe you'll get in to see the virtual runway.
