Endemol, media company which is majority owned by Spanish telecom giant Telefonica, has acquired its first U.S. digital property in JoeCartoon.com, an online animation site, according to a variety report.
Most of us know the site from the 1999 hit “Frog in a Blender,” which has reportedly been viewed 90 million times.
The company has plans to "significantly expand JoeCartoon's Web presence and develop specific content packages for mobile operators around the world." The use of flash animation on the site makes it easy to adapt for cell-phone use.
"This is an important acquisition for us as a company to show our commitment to the new digital frontier," said Jon Vlassopulos, VP of business development and digital media at Endemol USA.
Endemol provides reality shows in the U.S. like "Fear Factor," "Big Brother," "Deal or No Deal," and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
Besides using the new acquisition to offer mobile games, the company also plans on creating new TV series that are based on some of the characters in JoeCartoon, such as SuperFly, the Greenfields and Joe Momma.
