The recently formed new agency called "Merlin," which represents independent music artists, didn't take long to go into action, as they announced at the annual MidemNet music conference in France that they entered into a deal with Snocap, a digital music company, to empower the artists they represent to have their music sold in Internet social-networking sites like MySpace (NWS).
This will enable thousands of the indie labels around the world to monetize their music that is digitally downloaded from various online community sites.
Snocap is a company that was founded by the creator of Napster - Sean Fanning. They will use their retail service called Mystore to offer the ability of the music downloaded from Web sites. The launch coming from the MyStore/MySpace partnership will launch soon.
One differentiator with the deal is that contrary to the Apple (AAPL) iPod, the songs will be delivered in the MP3 format so it can be sold across numerous devices and download music Web sites.
All members of the Merlin group will be offered to partake in the agreement. "This immediately opens up what is currently the most popular Web site in the world to the independent labels," Merlin Chief Executive Charles Caldas told Reuters.
