Google Overtakes Technorati for Blog Search

Data from Hitwise shows that for the week ending December 23, Google Blog Search had more visits than Technorati did. This may not bode well for Technorati if the trend continues, which it probably will.

The change began to happen as a result of Google (GOOG) making a small consumer-friendly change to its blog search when it put a link to the search on its Google News home page. Almost immediately visits increased by 168 percent in only two weeks.

Google%20Blog%20Search.jpgAnother minor change that produced tremendous results was the eliminating of an extra step in getting to the search option. You used to have to click "more" and then "even more" to reach the search link. We've talked about this before, how getting rid of obstacles to consumers taking actions, can bring tremendous results. This is a good case study to confirm that.

Commenting upon what they considered a surprise demographic, emarketer said that 34% of Google's vistors were in the 18-24 age group while Technorati only had a 10% share of that same age group.

This doesn't really surprise me as younger people in relationship to technology always adopt it before the older demographics. MySpace (NWS) and YouTube are two examples where the average user is much older than the original crowd using it. With users of Google News being older, it shows that there is a lot of upside potential as older people discover the Google Blog Search option and its new ease of use.

Technorati doesn't seem to have been doing much for a long time. Maybe they've been looking for a buyer and possibly neglecting innovating and growing its blog search share. This could be a devastating blow to the company if Google Blog Search continues to grow at this pace.

Are you using Google Blog Search more than Technorati now?

I rarely use Google Blog Search... I think Technorati still rules. Its different, I feel. Technorati has grown up to be a blog search engine all the while, and I guess I trust them more.

I think at the rate Google is trying to take over everything, it won't be long before they crumble.

I don't use it either Kian, but it seems with their making it easier for the user it has really made a difference.

I do agree with you on the point that they may be trying to do too much and may spread themselves across far too many different areas that they don't have any expertise in. That could potentially cause a lot of problems for the company.
