The lines are continually blurring between the Internet and TV as Giorgio Armani brought his fashion show to the online world.
Armani said in a statement that "Couture is rooted in fashion history. It is the pinnacle of creativity and craftsmanship, which has always been a closed world to all but a few. Now through the democracy of the Internet we can provide a front row seat for everyone."
The democratization of the world seems to be growing through the Internet as for the first time anybody that had an Internet connection could watch the models show their wares down the runway.
This is a great step for everybody involved as it allows anybody that has interest a look at something that until recently couldn't have happened except to a select few.
Now on the marketing and branding side of things, there was something that I think could have been added that would have been even a greater hit. After the show, Armani threw a banquet of truffle risotto in a special hall for the several hundred guests invited.
Picture what it would have been like to have invited the Internet viewers into the hall via the Internet and being able to partake in the experience. I think that it would have really been a winner. Virtually hanging out at the dinner with the various celebrities like Cate Blanchett and Katie Holmes would have been a blast.
Or maybe they could have made a deal with a couple of them to interact during the dinner while cameras were rolling and conversations directed toward viewers were done in real time, while the people were dining. It would have made a person feel intimately immersed in the entire experience of a fashion show and all that goes with it.
I think these types of things will be part of personal and marketing experience as we creatively think and learn through experiences and missed opportunities what works and doesn't.
