After about a year in the works, the Walt Disney Co. (DIS) is set to launch its new Disney.com Web site on January 8 in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics show.
Disney CEO Robert Iger, who is one of the more forward-thinking media executives in the world, said that the new Disney.com site was "the single most important companywide strategy Disney is currently implementing." Overseeing the project is Disney executive Paul Yanover.
Included in the new redesigned site will be opportunities for chat, video clips and social networking, similar to MySpace (NWS) but with stronger parental controls in place for children.
The site was also changed to offer marketers a better advertising experience and opportunities through video ads and sponsorships. The company will also market subscription-based products via the site. There will also be enhanced customization options for the profiles that children create and their personal pages.
