When I heard that YouTube (GOOG) has been working with CBS and others on changing its layout so that the comments that are normally below the video, in some cases, are moved to a separate page that opens up in a new window, where you can no longer view the video, it made me wonder how this would go with regular users.
The CBS videos now must be accessed with a link to "view all comments," instead
of the normal ability to read and watch at the same time.
Quincy Smith, the president of CBS Interactive (CBS) said, “We just want to make sure the front page is a little bit cleaner, we thought it was a better user experience, and it gives us a second to weed out the completely unuseful comments.”
As one writer said in response to Smith's comment that it was done "in order to remove 'profane, unconstructive criticism,' and off-topic political vitriol," that was one of the major points in being there in the first place.
This isn't going to be a big deal for one reason I think, and that's that the audience on YouTube is older than it used to be. Younger viewers want and expect multi-tasking situations; older viewers don't care as much. With the average age being in the mid-thirties now, it probably won't cause that much of a protest.
