Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, announced on Monday that the for-profit arm of the company, Wikia Inc., is set to offer for free, "all the software, computing, storage and network access that Web site builders need to create community collaboration sites," according to Reuters.
"It is open-source software and open content," Wales said in a phone interview. "We will be providing the computer hosting for free, and the publisher can keep the advertising revenue."
The only thing asked by Wales is that sites that are built with his resources, link to Wikia.com, whose income comes from ad dollars.
The service is called "Open Serving." If you're familiar with it, it runs on a real easy version of the MediaWiki software.
It will probably cause a lot of problems for the existing online businesses that
provide free services for the cut of the ad profits.
For certain online marketers, this could really be something worth checking into.
