The Virgin/EMI label, for the first time, is promoting an online concert with pop/R&B singer Stacie Orrico. It will be featured on the virtual world site of Whyville.com.
"We're excited about it. We think it's a perfect target to hit Stacie's primary demographic, which are teens," Aaron Simon, director of marketing for Virgin Records told ClickZ. "It's the very first virtual program that we have done with any of our artists. We would definitely want to continue it. It's something that is so important when you're a teen artist to really get in front of your buyers. In front
of your fans."
One interesting thing about the concert, which will target kids between the ages of eight to fifteen, is that she will perform as an avatar for the concert.
Whyville estimates that of their almost two million members, they could get up to 6,000 for the online event.
The concert will last for about 45 minutes, which will be perfored by Orrico's avatar. Those watching the concert will be able to buy Orrico's ringtones or songs, along with virtual souvenir sales. Hey, that might work. It works great in Second Life. There will also be an eBay-based charity auction for the specific clothing that Orrico's avatar wears for the concert.
Simon adds that they will be exploring virtual concerts more in the future as they increase the idea. He also recognized that this will work with certain types of artists, and not all would necessarily fit into the idea.
The online concert is set for Saturday December 9 at 2 PM pacific time at Whyville.com.
