To reinforce what we've been talking about in the power that giving away something free does for someone. I want to use an example of a colleague of mine. He was a disc jockey in Houston quite a few years ago.
There was a big company in New York that was going to come to Houston and look for a DJ to come up and take over a big station there. Everybody in the radio community heard about it. They knew the criteria would be that the best disc jockey in the area would be chosen.
So what did my colleague do? Before the recruiters came down to Houston, he went around to as many events that he could, and did DJ work for free. Everywhere he went he met people who remembered him for offering his services - you got it - for free.
As a result, when the people from the Big Apple came down, they took survey of who the people of Houston thought was the best DJ in the area. Guess who won? Yep. He got the job. He told me that it wasn't because he was the best necessarily, but because he got out there and made himself known to everyone in the area.
He didn't think of what it would cost him to do things in this way. He wanted that job, and had to do something to put his name and face before the people of Houston. He gave away some time and won big-time.
Giving away something free, by its very nature, brings you to another level. Never underestimate its power. People love free, and more importantly, love to share free with others.
