A new study by Mediamark shows the largest growing areas that internet users are using to interact with. The results show that going to blogs, online phone usage and watching Web video are the fastest growing areas furing the last year.
It's still interesting and useful to note that the most used online tools are still the old standbys; they include email, news services and online shopping sites.
For blogs they increased visits by 163% while online phone calls grew by 197%. Video during the fall period measured, grew a smaller 11%, but is up 123% for the
year.
Even with these huge gains, as the report stated, the old tools are still used far more. Email is still by far the tops with 70.5% of users still adopting it. News watching online is taken part in by 40.2% of internet users, and shopping by 34.2%.
Anne Marie Kelly, vice president of marketing and strategic planning, said, “We should not be surprised that relatively newer activities on the Internet have lower overall usage. But it is worth noting the phenomenal growth rates in just a year’s time for these activities.”
That's one thing as marketers we need to take into account when we hear high percentages of growth being thrown around. We need to still look at the overall picture and see what it means for usage in comparison to those things that have been around for years, and are still being used a lot.
Even with all the negative press for email, it's still overwhelmingly the highest used online activity out there. To neglect that, and other high-level online activities, would be disastrous in your business strategy.
