With MySpace saying recently that they will be offering a mobile phone service, you knew it wouldn't be long before YouTube would do the same. It didn't take long as Chad Hurley, YouTube founder and CEO, told an advertising conference that mobile services would offer a great opportunity for the company.
"Within the next year we hope to have something on a mobile device, it's going to be a huge market, especially for the video mind-set we're
dealing with, it's a natural transition," Hurley said.
I'm not sure why he thinks that, as studies have shown that mobile adaptation of entertainment has been for the most part resisted by users - other than ringtones. Most people are thinking that it will take many years longer, if ever, before this might be adapted.
Other than making sure MySpace isn't positioned within the minds of users concerning mobile, I guess I don't get the purpose of this announcement. It's like announcing a non-event. That's part of marketing though; keeping your name in front of people while you bluff your way through.
In that case I can see the importance of this, but they have to be careful, as Microsoft (MSFT) has found out with Vista and Yahoo (YHOO) with Panama ... make your claim too soon and it can backfire on you.
