Yahoo is Trying to be all Things to all People

An internal Yahoo (YHOO) memo that was written by Senior Vice President Brad Garlinghouse reveals that the company is going to be shaken up for its poor performance. The memo stated that cuts of up to 20 percent could be imposed upon the workforce.

The next statement reveals a lot that can reinforce something we talk at thealphamarketer about all the time concerning the significance of Brad Garlinghouse.jpgreaching out to niche markets.

Garlinghouse said that Yahoo is held back from a shortage of leadership that says on track, business focus and a unified strategy. He said: "We lack a focused, cohesive vision for our company, we want to do everything and be everything -- to everyone."

That's the problem when even big companies don't understand who they are and what they represent. The same is true of smaller online companies as well.

Take to heart what Yahoo is learning and apply it to your online business. Do you have a specific focus? Do you stay on track for the path you've laid out? Is your strategy interrelated and connected? These questions need to be asked on a consistent basis to ensure that we don't veer off into becoming all things to all people. That will bring us to disaster.
