Yahoo's (YHOO) CEO, Terry Semel, believes that the growth of online advertising has been understated because projections haven't included the increase of advertising on video, mobile and social networking sites. He asserts that online advertising projections have only included graphic and search advertising.
"So whether it's mobile or whether it's video or whether it's more and more community (social networking sites), these factors have not gone
into those numbers, so we think the actual growth potential of advertising online is really being understated," said Semel.
Semel also feels that creativity in online advertising areas, including unique ways to integrate advertising in videos, along with specific sponsorships, will key a lot of the fast growth.
With video advertising expected to be between 8 to 10 percent of all the online advertising market by 2010, and companies working hard on figuring out ways to offer advertising on social networking sites, he may just be right in this. What it means for those of us who offer online sites made for the purpose of attracting advertisers, is to not strategize as if this is years away, it's right on our doorstep.
