Watching the social network sites grow for a while and getting a feel for how to market to them, it seems that online advertisers are getting ready to move into the space in a big way.
In 2007, marketing on US social networking sites is projected to increase to $865 million, up from $350 million in 2006, according to an eMarketer report called Social Network Marketing: Ad Spending
Update. The report adds that by 2010, it will reach an enormous $2.15 billion.
Internationally spending should reach around $1.1 billion in 2007, compared to $445 million on 2006. By 2010, it will reach to around $2.8 billion total.
At this time MySpace continues to be the leader in social network online spending as it accounts for 60 percent of the US total. They are figured to reach around $525 million for 2007.
One problem that needs to be addressed, as Debra Williamson, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the report says: "The longer existing social networks take to develop adequate ROI metrics, the bigger the opening for a next generation of networks that are built from the ground up to accommodate advertising."
