Webmasters have been waiting for it for quite a while, and now it's here: Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) have agreed to jointly use "Sitemaps 0.90" protocol instead of separate standards.
"The launch of Sitemaps is significant because it allows for a single, easy way for websites to provide content and metadata to search engines," said Yahoo Search director of product management Tim Mayer. "Sitemaps helps webmasters surface content that is typically difficult for crawlers to discover, leading to a more comprehensive search experience for users."
This will help Web site content to be found easier and for search engines to better understand what information is on the web pages. This is a good move by all those involved as webmasters will be able to offer a richer experience on their web sites through increased content that is found via the crawlers. This is a win for everybody.
