In a major coup, Ask.com struck out against rivals MSN (MSFT) and Google (GOOG), landing the Lycos account for natural search and sponsored listings, according to Online Media Daily. MSN Windows Live was the former provider of natural search results and Google supplied the sponsored search listings.
Lycos is no small deal as they accounted for over 25 million unique visitors in September. According to their internal numbers they also receive 125 million search requests a month.
Andrew Moers, vice president for business development and syndication at Ask.com said, " ... this partnership will broaden the reach of Ask sponsored listings, both expanding the inventory and network for Ask advertisers as well as promoting ASL [Ask Sponsored Listings] to companies interested in advertising on the Lycos properties."
Lycos said that the reason for the switch was they considered Ask.com's search technology superior to all others. They especially liked the ability to enlarge or narrow searches through their Zoom feature.
This has got to give Microsoft and Google some concerns as Lycos is considered one of the top 20 Internet properties.
