How to find what people within your niche want or need
So once you've discovered your niche and who you want to serve - while building credibility and relationships - the question then arises about how you can find out what this group of people need that you would be able to provide.
The answer to that could be a couple of things. Look for the obvious. Recall your online conversatinos you've had with them, and mine out the things that they've said.
There's the possibility that they don't realize that there could be something better, but you've heard them complain about something they're not happy with,
or is lacking in their interests that they wished was available.
Look for what could be called "breakdowns" or limitations. What have people expressed desires for? Where in the mix are they underserved? Is there something that has come up enough times that it warrants you looking into it and researching the area?
The more obvious way of doing it is to simply ask them. After all, that's what all the research and statistics that come out are based upon. The only thing to be cautious here to me is that there could be other people looking for similar things you are, and you've got to be careful not to give away too much and have them steal your thoughts and ideas.
Another thing to consider is that if people think you're there only to get something from them (and you shouldn't be), then they also may be reluctant to release the information you need.
This is the reason why it's so important to build personal credibility and trust before you attempt to draw information out of people.
The other thing is to be sure you only use the information they share with you to create great products and services for them. Don't use it to for any other reason that could backfire on you, like share it with other companies that will spam them, just so you can make a few extra dollars.
