One More Important Word on Competitors
Probably the major reason to research our competitors thoroughly, is to see really how good they are running their businesses. If they're really doing it good, how much room is there for you in that space? How much of a twist have you added to your product of service that will make you stand out from them?
Even if they do have a good product, do they know how to run a business? How is their Web site structured? Is it easy to navigate? Is it simple to use their shopping cart and check out system? Is it fast? You get the idea. Service is just as important as product.
How about their marketing? Is it compelling? Do they make you want to buy when they give product descriptions or present ad copy?
How would their product be positioned against yours in the mind of people you're trying to win to do business with you?
The point is that even putting up a nice looking Web site with a good product isn't enough anymore. You've got to be able to run a business. It doesn't matter if it's offline or online. You must know if your chief competitors will be long-term competitors, or will just be a quick fling. It really matters that you know so you can use their weaknesses against them in your marketing.
I don't mean direct attacks, but showing how you provide better value and products and ease-of-use for their dollars and time.
Look past the hype when you check them out and look at the nuts and bolts of their operation. That is what will tell you the real story.
