Why We Talk About Being Able to Speak Their Language
We've talked a number of times about the ability to speak the language of the niche group we're going to serve. There is one, important reason that it must be done. If you really don't understand the target group you're going to reach out to, take some time to learn the ins and outs of it before you enter into the mix.
What's the reason for this? Those that are true fans of a specific product or service, speak a certain language that pertains to that specialty. To not speak that language, is to offer yourself up as an outsider, somebody that may not really know what they're doing.
How many times has this happened when something you know a lot about is talked about by someone to you, and you know that they absolutely don't have any idea what they're talking about? While in general coversation we can get away with that, when serving a niche demographic, you won't be taken seriously.
If it's truly something you love, this shouldn't be a problem, nonetheless, if you're good at some of it, but weak at other parts of it, take some time to at least get familiar with terms used by those you're reaching out and marketing to. It will greatly enhance your credibility in the eyes of your potential customers.
It also adds certain key words that you can use when you communicate through your Web site or write ad copy. There are certain "buzz" words that all people will respond to. It's imperative that we know them.
