Create an Online Niche with an Offline Store
What's one way you could get into the online business if you have an existing store aleady? What could you do to differentiate if you pretty much offer similar products that numerous stores already offer online?
The answer is actually not that difficult. To begin with, take a part of what your store offers. What various departments does the store represent? Now obviously, you could never offer a huge array of goods from a brick-and-mortar store; space simply wouldn't allow it.
But think of some of the basic things within a certain area that you offer now, and look at the suppliers you have and the extended products they offer. You should be able to come up with a number of products that aren't part of the normal ones offered to the average customer. From there you could build an online niche business based around that specific theme, with regular items, but a lot more unique ones.
You could use your existing people as far as helping to answer questions if people need answers, or outsource it so you can center on the core business.
The key is to use the Web site as a niche site, and to also enhance your existing business. Through the web you can just about sell anything through putting up a quality picture and description, along with some interesting content to give people stuff to look further at.
Once that's up and going, you could go through each department of your store and see if there is something unique you could offer that could be another niche online business. Essentially you're extending your brand and store into the Internet world and reaching an audience far greater than you ever could locally.
