Citing AzACreations, e-consultancy offered ten reasons why viral campaigns fail. I really like this list as it stays away from the usual "create something engaging" stuff, and talks more about common mistakes that can really hurt any campaign; no matter how good the content is.
Here are three of the ten reasons given:
1. Failing to create an incentive for users to pass it along
2. Forgetting to ask the user to take action
3. Not making it easy enough for users to forward content
The reason I include these here is because they are common mistakes even among the best marketers. When all the attention is on the final content that is going to be sent out, it is shocking to see many huge companies and marketers that don't include some of the vital things listed above.
While nobody can know exactly what it is that causes things to go viral, you can be sure that even if you create something that works, if you don't include the essentials listed above, you will greatly decrease the results that you could have had.
Make a cheat sheet of the important elements you need on any attempted viral campaign and go down it and check everything before you send your offering out. It will do more to increase your chances at success than anything else.
