The longer the Internet is around, the more it mimics the real world. This is the major reason why online community has always been part of the experience; the tools are simply here now to make it easier to interact.
One area that this is gravitating to also is the Second Life virtual world. The people there can buy land and develop it into any number of things that interests them.
What is interesting is that the same things that are happening in the real world considering marketing, is also being reflected in this world.
"The key is to stimulate residents of the world, rather than simply creating an ad and interrupting them with it. There is also no value in reducing the cost of marketing by buying advertising in bulk, since there are no economies of scale and no manufacturing costs to minimise. These new rules set virtual worlds apart. They might also spark some interest in creating different forms of advertising. The ability to think creatively about what is possible in a virtual world could help to stimulate new ideas in the real world."
It seems that the Internet world is rapidly becoming like the world that has created it. All the rules of the offline world, as far as they relate to what motivates people, are becoming part of the Internet world as well. This is going to become increasingly important in how you market online.
How people want to be marketed to offline will be similar to how they want to be marketed to online. What is interesting to people offline will still be interesting to people online. It will only change as people's interests change. This will be one of the major keys to how businesses market online from now on. The two worlds are basically becoming one.
