It won't be very long before those words become a reality online. There are already a huge amount of lesser-known companies starting their online TV channels and networks.
One example of that is Narrowstep, a four-year-old company that offer over 100 TV channels over the Internet. There is so much demand for its service that it signs between 20-25 new channels on a month now worldwide.
At this time, these sites are experimenting with all types of revenue models; from advertising, banner ads, button ads and subscription services.
Once the connection to the TV becomes ubiquitous, the explosion in
variety and numbers will be faster than anyone could possibly measure.
Just like anything else online, once the explosion comes, it will be a
battle over who can deliver to their niche market the best. With the probability of hundreds of thousands of online channels being available; this will be a challenge to many.
AT&T Operations Inc. Senior Vice President for Programming Amy Friedlander confirms that this will be a huge problem as the regular person usually will watch only between 8 and 12 channels. It won't matter if there are a million available; that has pretty much been the behavior of people measured for years.
One thing for online marketers to consider would be to create their own channel in their existing market and offer it up on their website or blog; or whatever means you use to interact with your customers.
Think of yourself doing it entertaining, throw in some humor and possibly have the feel of direct, personal communication between you and your viewers. If you're not up to it yourself, hire someone to do it while providing them the script. This is going to be big in the not too distant future. It would be something I would start working on now if it fits into your objectives and plans.
