Several thousand years ago a wise man revealed that there is "nothing new under the sun." If that was true back then, I would say it's also true today.
What we may think of as new today really isn't. The names and products may change but the materials used to make them don't.
Most of the time what happens is that existing ideas or materials are blended, mixed or remixed to create something that seems totally new. One example to think of would be mixing of chocolate and peanut butter to create a "new' kind of candy.
This is why when people try to make it look like things like online community or social-networking are new, it's really funny. Not only has it been going on for a long time, but even on the Internet it has been that way from the beginning. It's now simply taking on the offline reality and bringing it online. People have always been in community.
The simple concept here is that we need to learn to be those that remix existing ideas, concepts or ingredients. That's one of the reasons I love to read across various disciplines and interests to find nuggets that I never would have thought of putting together before.
Not only is it interesting to do, but very engaging as you put things together in your mind and imagination to see if they would work.
Think of the wheel. People continually take it and wrap all sorts of things around it. You have the car, motorcycles, tractors, wheels on planes, bicycles, tillers, toys and space shuttles, among many things. People take it and wrap something around it to make it into something else then it was before.
We have been in the age of the remix for a long time. Become an expert and putting things that are not always obvious together and you'll find some pretty neat products or service to offer to people. Just make sure when you come up with these neat ideas that there is a market for them.
