In a recent survey, it was concluded that 10% of U.S. Internet users watch television broadcasts online. The major reason give was so they wouldn't have to watch commercials and for its convenience.
The survey, by Conference Board Consumer Internet Barometer, asked 10,000 households if they have stopped watching regular TV as a result of online usage. At this time the answer is that time spent watching TV hasn't diminished. I do see this as a trend that can't continue as there is only so much time in a person's day; something will eventually have to give here.
Around 33% of those that watch online TV do it with others. About
66% watch online for entertainment, while 16% do it several times a week.
AS of now, the most popular sites being visited are news sites, accounting for 62% of all online TV watchers.
It does make me wonder if a lot of these people are doing some of their watching at work, as it seems almost impossible in our busy world to have the time to go home, do other stuff online, and still watch online TV without it affecting the time watching regular TV.
That particular question doesn't seem to have been asked by the researchers.
