Companies and marketers are quickly moving into the social-networking space to offer their wares. MySpace is one of the leading virtual real estate providers that are being sought out.
If you're considering doing the same thing, there is one thing to think about before you do it: why not get your fans to do it?
What I'm saying is first look to see if there is already a fan page for your company, product or service already. If there is, that will be far more important than anything that anyone in your company or a marketing firm could offer. It will be real, heartfelt, and genuine. People visiting it will know the difference.
If you don't find one you can than ask yourself the question of why not. People who don't find what you do compelling enough to rave about you, certainly won't create profiles on MySpace to promote you. In that case, whether you promote your own page or not won't matter; people won't engage with it anyway.
Now having said that, maybe you do have true fans and they just haven't thought about doing it yet. Here's where you could put out feelers to those who appreciate what you do and see if they think it's a good idea to have some type of fan page for you.
You could actually communicate with them asking them if they think an online community surrounding you company and/or its products would be something they would appreciate and enjoy interacting with. Don't ask with the purpose of being the one to do it, but rather see if there is interest in someone else getting it going and doing the evangelism for you.
You job would be just to ask questions and plant the seed and see if you get any takers.
The reason why this is a better way of doing it is because a fan sight that is truly run by fans, will be far more effective and productive than one created by you. Just ask them, you may be surprised at the answer.
