All of us know about the social-networking trend. One thing that isn't talked about too much considering this trend, is the power of building communities within the overall communities; or a network within the network.
One of the great things about this is that it can fly below the radar of your competitors who are always lurking around trying to find the next thing that everybody is doing.
I know that this is just another way of saying niche, but it does have enough of a little twist to it to be somewhat different.

Right now the majority of social-networking sites have more of a feel of chaos than order. This can work for your benefit if you put things together right.
Think of anything that you could put up on a network that will draw likeminded people to it. Whatever you or others are a fan of will work. You can build a trusted community and then create a product or service that is built around their interests.
Thousands of people have built these communities based upon interests, but not that many have attempted to introduce something that community members might be interested in buying. One area you could look for as a way to do it is with the numerous bands that have done this great with their music.
What if you were one of those bands and you had something besides music you wanted to offer? What would that something be? Whatever the area of interest you have, that is comparable to being a band. What in that area of interest could you create that would interest a community built around similar interests? The answer to that question is the ticket to success.

One of the great things about the internet is that it offers choice for the consumer. No one size fits all.
Here's a growing site that does that: http://OpenSourceDating.com
