With the recent introduction of News Feed and Mini-Feed products, and the resultant backlash that Mark Zuckerberg had to do some damage control with, we now know why it has been so important to the Facebook universe. They were created to be platforms for the coming ad campaign Facebook is about to launch.
With the introduction of the new ad unit, called Sponsored Stories, ads will be placed within the third position of the individual user's News Feed. They will either be presented in a banner format or possibly as a video clip.
Mike Murphy, Facebook's chief revenue officer said, "Up until now, most advertising on social network sites hasn't leveraged social networking behavior; this offers a viral opportunity that is unique for advertisers that is not disruptive."
The platform has been made in such a way that marketers looking to put a more customized offering in the view of users will benefit the most.
When a user clicks on an ad and join the advertiser's 'group,' then the users' friends will be given the opportunity to interact with that specific marketer's group.
Even though Mike Murphy says that this isn't disruptive, the users are the ones that will decide if that's true. What do you think of their new ad unit?
