In the aftermath of the Lonelygirl15 exposure, there are some things that I think are important to look at in its wild success.
It seems that one of the most important marketing lessons to take away from this was the video diary aspect of it.
Think for a moment. Have you ever been in a friends room hanging out, or in their house somewhere and they tell you about their diary that is sitting over there locked with the little key hanging around your friends neck? That, in a sense, is one of the things that made Lonelygirl15 so enticing for many to watch.
The video was like watching somewhat of a mysterious life being gradually, interestingly unfolded before our eyes. People couldn't wait to hear the next revelation of Bree.
Another unique thing that made it so popular was, for example, when she began "A Peace Offering," with asking the viewers if she should offer a peace offering to Daniel. It gave the illusion of being interactive with the video. This added a lot of interest and feeling like you had a part in the story as it unfolded, and were helping to guide the outcome. People ate it up.
There was a hint of mystery, voyeurism, and inclusion that made this such a compelling video series to watch. Again, I would call this a "video diary," and it offers tremendous insight into the makeup of what people are like and want to interact with online. Think of these including these things in your online video marketing strategy.
