Quite a few people hear about viral marketing and misunderstand what it actually means. The major thing to remember about viral marketing is that it isn't about creating a typical marketing message and then thinking that you can get people to start spreading your message around. In other words it's not about marketing your marketing message.
If people aren't in any way interested in spreading our message, than how do we spread it? The problem is that we think that those that have succeeded in viral marketing have done it through the great message they have. This isn't the reason.
The reason why viral marketing succeeds is because people are given something that is humorous, witty, unique or compelling that they just can't help wanting to send to someone else to look at. That is how simple, and yet hard viral marketing is.
It's not the message, it's what the message is wrapped in that makes something viral. Remember that everyone has products or services that are somewhat similar in what they will do. Nobody is going to send something to their friends that is just another product or service offering. They send things to their friends that have made an impact on them when they see it.
Keep these simple things in mind when considering a viral campaign.
