As we've been talking about lately concerning rich media ads; here is a look at one major online company that is making changes to take advantage of this growing trend.
Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive (WPNI) is now planning to offer new rich media ads across more popular sites. This will include their site, Slate.com, BudgetTravelOnline.com and Newsweek.com. They've acquired the services of CheckM8 to provide the technology. They're the ones that have developed the "slider ad."

How the ad itself works is that when the Web page is accessed, it pushes the page down on the initial page load, revealing the short video clip. When the ad is over, the page slides back up into its original position. The visitor has the option of closing the ad if they choose to.
This is extremely popular because it doesn't take up any regular space on the web page, so the existing ads can stay in place while offering another way of marketing.
Jeff Burkett, director of sales development for WPNI said, ""We're looking at that kind of thing--unique, customizable implementations that you don't see every day."
I'm sure most of us have seen these in operation, yet the idea is a great one. An ad being offered without taking up any of your online real estate is a great way to increase your offerings without alienating your visitors.
