Verizon (VZ) is offering a new beta release of a free online service that empowers users to organize and get involved with games for free over a local area network. The purpose is so that people will have a reason to purchase its broadband service.
The beta service, which is callled PlayLinc will interact with AOL's instant messaging service - AOL's Open AIM program so that participants can message or voice chat with each other, says Media Post. The service will be downloadable and free, and include ads.
Verizon will market its broadband network, phone services and mobile phones on the free site and within the program also. They will also sell other game downloads in the future as another way of monetizing the service.
