AOL, in a move to upgrade its AOL Games network, acquired GameDaily from Gigex. While it has not been substantiated, GameDaily.com claims to be one of the top three visited video gaming sites. The purchase price was around $3 million, according to paidcontent.com.
Ralph Rivera, General Manager of AOL Games said about the purchase: “We felt that GameDaily’s independent thinking and also its driving to reach a broader audience that goes beyond enthusiast and into the mainstream is something that resonates with our own programming strategy."
Rivera added that when people think of AOL Games they usually think of casual, card and board games rather than the games like Grand Theft Auto or Halo. In other words the demographic for the casual gaming market tends to be women 40 or over, and this deal will expand their reach to younger males and attempt to create a different feeling toward AOL Games when people think of it.
The deal also includes the GameDaily BIZ newsletter.
