What to market on MySpace

myspace marketing.jpgWith a growing member base approaching 100 million and around 500,000 new members added weekly, MySpace.com, the social networking community has some potential for entrepreneurs to market to.

Don't be fooled by the huge numbers at this time; it is still not that easy to make sense of online community.

Still, some are beginning to market to it with some success.

The most obvious and successful use of MySpace and sites like it are its potential for musicians to market on it. A number of them have actually launched their careers from MySpace, and there is still a ton of potential in that space.

Almost anything related to entertainment has great possibilities here if it is done right and marketed to the teen and young adult crowd at this time.

Another possibility in this medium is anything visual, edgy or related to video. One entrepreneur that owns a photography company markets on MySpace with success.

Darren Mahuron, who owns the business, has landed contracts with Starbucks. "I've had a Web site, but as soon as I put my work on MySpace, the e-mails went through the roof," he said. "I let MySpace do my marketing for me. If MySpace went away, I don't know what I would do."

When Starbucks (SBUX) found Mahuron's photos on MySpace, they made offers to use his artwork at a couple of their stores in Denver. As a result, 10 pieces of Mahuron's art will be shown at each store between Aug. 7 to Sept. 7.

Another company, Strhess, a chic apparel company in Cleveland, Ohio, contracted Mahuron to design marketing photos for the company.

They contacted him after discovering pictures of models wearing Strhess clothing on his site.

A couple of strengths that MySpace offers, according to Mahuron, is that it draws together a community that is hungry for new and fresh ideas. He also said, "You can get instant feedback on what people like or dislike."

Right now those products or services that target young adults or teens are what are working on MySpace, if you don't target that audience, it may be a waste of time right now to market there.
