What the new MySpace Comedy strategy means - Part Two

latenightplayers.jpgWe are talking about the official launch of MySpace Comedy and what we can learn from the concept that we can take hold of and use.

First of all let's look at what MySpace was when it was acquired by News Corp. (NWS), it was a huge glob of people that congregated in and out of an Internet social space.

News Corp.'s job was and is to find a way to market and monetize this huge potential. MySpace Comedy gives a look into their strategy.

The problem they must solve is how to tap into this chaos and bring some order to it; not in the sense of trying to diminish the spontaneity, but to rather to segment it. That's just a way of saying that they need to find and promote niches within this existing, huge marketplace. MySpace Comedy is their first step into this fray.

So we have the ubiquitous term called "niche" that we always hear talked about. In online marketing, we can't talk enough about it, as it is the present and the future of online success. Of course we have to get past talk to initiating creative online niche communities of our own.

What is needed to be seen here, is that in the case of MySpace Comedy, they are creating the tools for comedians and comedy lovers to meet. Tools to interact in the way that they want to.

One of the things it is doing is to offer profile features that allow them to post tour dates, share audio and video clips and interact with their fans.

What's the secret behind all of this? The "parts" of MySpace, are going to be far more valuable than the whole. They are going to take one step at a time to find the numerous markets that exist within the whole and segment and serve them. Finally they will create tools specifically for those unique communities within the overall community.

Take these thoughts and apply them to the specific markets you are serving. Think of tools for your community that allow them to interact the way they want to. Provide any type of platform that will enhance the niche. It's like when we talk about management: provide all the tools needed and then get out of the way and let them go.

The point is that "niche" is more than simply narrowing something down to a specific category when it comes to online marketing. This is only the first step.
