One of the problems that News Corp. (NWS) inherited when it bought MySpace was how to take this huge, generally populated site and make it into a money-producing venture.
With the official launch of their new channel MySpace Comedy going to be announced on Tuesday, they are unveiling their strategy. There's a lot to learn from what they're doing.
First, they are tapping into one of their strength; which is providing a platform for being discovered and self-promotion.
They will be partnering with the Improv comedy club chain. MySpace will also sponsor comedy events which will allow them to get exclusive content in connection to the deals they've made. MySpace also added that they currently have 7,500 comedians already on the site, which makes them the largest online community for comedy and comics.
MySpace president and co-founder Tom Anderson said "I'd heard comedians working MySpace into their routines and giving out their URLs as early as 2004, it was a no-brainer to make a Comedy section and features designed especially for them. It's our hope that MySpace Comedy, much like Music and Film before it, will serve as a launch pad for up-and-coming comedians and as an attraction for the biggest names in the industry."
Next post we'll talk more on what that can teach us about our online marketing strategies.
