While our customers want instant gratification, from a marketing way of looking at things, this would be a disaster for us. In other words, if we operate our businesses based upon short-term strategies, we will ultimately fail. We must learn to put things into motion that offer nothing on the front end, but tremendous opportunity on the back end.
To delay our marketing gratification has more to do with not only an attitude, but an understanding of how human beings behave and economic forces.
One thing that I have seen throughout years of marketing and running businesses is that one of the greatest causes of business failures is putting into action some type of short-term plan that doesn't work, well, in the short-term. The result is always disappointment, disillusionment and giving up and quitting.
How many times do you see the "herd" following after the 'next new thing' all the time. This is not only in Internet marketing, but in all business and financial fields. This can offer us great opportunities.
Like many of us in the business and financial worlds know: if you're just hearing about something, and it's all over the news and across communication platforms, it is already too late to get in. Those who are going to make the good money have already taken advantage of the opportunity. When news gets out it's because it has been so engaged with that it finally becomes newsworthy and known.
The way to measure where things are at with any "new" product or service is in how much buzz has been created. If everyone is hearing about it and doing it, it is probably not going to do much for you. The person that created it has unleashed a viral marketing campaign that will help them a lot, but probably won't do much for you. To make the real money, you need to be the one unleashing the campaign.
Going viral is a great strategy. It requires an inner discipline that offers things in the early stages that are free and useful to the users. This is where delaying your gratification comes in. Once you get people interested in your free offerings, they give you permission to offer them products and services they pay for. You've got to be willing to wait for the process to work.
If you can embrace the concept of delaying your gratification for the purpose of building a solid, long-lasting business, you will be ahead of about 99% of your fellow marketers. Most aren't really trying to build a business but are in reality gambling to see if they can get a quick windfall.
