According to a new report by comScore Networks, World Cup fans are logging on to web sites in record numbers.
For example on the Yahoo-hosted FIFA World Cup site 5.3 million unique visitors visited the site from over 35 nations, on June 22. There was a record 290 million page views on the Yahoo (YHOO) site that day. AOL (TWX) and MSN (MSFT) had large traffic increases as well.
The Italy-Czech Republic game had viewership increase from the normal 6 million a day to over 20 million for this important game.
Traffic for the Japan-Brazil game tripled on the Japanese-language site, going up to 16 million page views.
When the U.S. team lost to Ghana, page views increased to 144 million from the normal 61 million daily hits.
The weekend, as typical of the web, slowed down some, even for the countries that live their soccer teams. Evidently they go out to watch it on the local sports bars rather than at home.
