Every survey, every study and every successful marketer says the same thing: Do not mess around with the navigation aspect of your site.
There is nowhere in the online business where it as important to keep it simple and easy to use.
If for some reason your pages are long, then add a menu at the bottom of the page.
Why is it so important? Internet users are even getting shorter attention spans than they have had. Anything that makes them wait or do something extra, will cause them to click off of your site to one that is simpler and easier to use. I know of a number of bare minimum sites that don't look to appealing, yet do great at business for this reason alone.
At the same time, there are people I know that throw tons of money at creating complicated sites that they think are cool and neat, but they do terribly in getting visitors to stay. It's just takes too long to figure out what they're supposed to do.
If you do nothing else, keep your site navigation simple!
