Have you noticed that almost every large Internet company are just starting to copy each other? I have to admit it sickens me some.
What they are doing is trying to not allow one another to "niche" something as their own, and unique to the company. I am referring here to Microsoft, Yahoo, Ask.com, Google and others like them.
Even with the new kids on the block like YouTube and MySpace, they're all copying everything they do so that all of them are becoming the same. That's what it means to be a commodity.
Why does this bother me? It works sameness into everything. It encourages mediocrity in the offerings. When I want to do a certain thing, I want to go to the unique one doing it that does it really great. Now all of them are offering the same things, and while there is some differentiation, it's not in the product or service, but in ease of use. How long will that last? I don't know.
I think the main thing to learn for us online marketers is that technology will never be the unique thing that differentiates you. Everyone else will simply copy it and do the same thing and you end up being part of the commodity network.
We have to learn to differentiate with something besides technology in these years ahead if we want to really separate ourselves from our competitors.
