There is one thing that I've seen online marketers do, even those that have been around for a while, that hurts their email marketing strategies.
It is the simple placement of their sign-up form. Many have it in a number of places other than the obvious one. We always have to remember that the great majority of surfers will look at a page without scrolling down it. If there is nothing there to catch their notice, they quickly go on to the next web site.
The answer to that is to make sure your opt-in form is either at or near the top of the page above the fold. In a recent study by MarketingSherpa, they found only 49% of 200 online publisher's sites had email registration forms above the fold. The ecommerce sites visited 79% had opt-in forms above the fold.
This is amazing when you consider that online publishers are especially dependent on the commercial strength and success of their email lists.
Keep your forms on the top of the page and that will put you ahead of half of the publishing people out there attempting to build lists and over 20% ahead of other ecommerce sites.
