One way to get insight into what types of things are getting people interested in discussing is Google (GOOG) Groups. That along with other ones like Yahoo! (YHOO) Groups ad MSN (MSFT) Groups.
The way to do this is to look for the newly created groups to see consumers are talking about. Specifically look for the better known brands and service marks and their consumer support groups. When you search through the archives you'll get a good idea what is bothering consumers the most.
Another point to keep in mind here is that if you see a lot of spam, don't waste your time there as it means that there is no moderator and as a result no discussion. Remember that the whole purpose in doing this is to get keyword ideas, and nothing else.
