Google (GOOG) Inc. is continuing its assault upon Microsoft (MSFT) Corp. as it announced that it is introducing an online spreadsheet Tuesday.
The online spreadsheet will offer consumers and businesses a free alternative to Microsoft's Excel.
To get away from overloading their computers. Google spreadsheet will be distributed to a limited group of people. They also want to take time to fix any glitches that may come up as well as offer more features in the near future.
Google is accepting sign-ups for the spreadsheet at 9 a.m. EDT Tuesday via the "labs" section of their Web site. There is no indication of when they will cut off the applicants.
The spreadsheet isn't as powerful as Excel, as it won't create charts or offer a menu of controls through right-hand button clicking.
Its overall purpose is to make it easy for users to access the same spreadsheet from various computers and different times, empowering authorized users to edit or add data without having to e-mail back and forth.
With their recent acquisition of Writely, it is obvious that they are going at Microsoft through offering an online office equivalent.
